About This Print

A small format print after a 1840-1842 Hiroshige depiction of Monkey Bridge, originally created as part of a four panel harimaze print.  The bridge got its name "because the original rickety, plank structure was so precarious that only an agile monkey could supposedly cross it." Hiroshige created at least three prints picturing Monkey Bridge and this collections small print "borrowed" design elements from several of them, but is overall closest in design to the below print cut from the four panel harimaze.

original print cut from an untitled harimaze sheet, 1840-1842
