Hagiwara Hideo (1913-2007)
Memory of the Coast in Oregon State
1967
Woodblock print with hand-applied color and metallic filings on paper
The Vivian and Gordon Gilkey Graphic Arts Collection, 81.81.634
Hagiwara employed many non-traditional techniques, including the use of found objects to impress images on the print. The prominent image of driftwood in this work was impressed from its real life counterpart, likely gathered on the Oregon coast. This print, an artist’s proof, is quite rare; only one other artist’s proof is known to exist.
