About This Print

Two carriages with the Imperial Seal are departing the Imperial Palace.  Nijubashi is seen in the background.  The occupant(s) of the first carriage are unseen, but are assumed to be Emperor Meiji and the Empress, and the occupants who are visible in the second carriage are unknown.

If the emperor is in the first carriage where is the royal phoenix that usually adorns his carriage?  Why are the royal couple not shown as their personages were regularly portrayed in prints since the 1870s?
