Police Confront Burglar in Kabuki Theater

by Utagawa Yoshitaki, 1875

IHL Cat. #311

About This Print

At the top left of this "news nishiki-e" is a banner held aloft by two cherubs containing the name of the Osaka illustrated newspaper Shinbun zue 新聞圖會.  In another state of this same print, shown below, the newspaper's name was carved differently and the number of this print, "No. 39" was shown.  My guess is that the above print, IHL Cat. #311, was issued at a later time.  For a summary of the brief life of nishiki-e shinbun (newspaper color woodblock prints) see the article Nishiki-e shinbun and Newspapers in Meiji Japan.

I have not come across a translation of the text, but the illustration seems to show two policemen surprising a burglar on a kabuki stage.
