About This Print

One of 200 prints issued as part of the series ga taikan (Encyclopedia of Noh Plays) depicting a scene from the play Shunzei Tadanori by the playwright Naitō Zaemon.

The Play - Shunzei Tadanori (Shunzei and Tadanori)

Source: A Guide to No, P.G. O'Neill, Hinoki Shoten, 1929, p. 169.

Okabe no Rokuyata, who has killed Tadanori in battle, brings Shunzei a poem which he found in Tadanori's quiver.  Tadanori's ghost then appears and after complaining that Shunzei has included a poem of his in an anthology as an anonymous one, and talking of poetry in general, he speaks of the torments a warrior suffers after death.
