About This Print

Autumn and the maple tress are aflame in this depiction of the Mochizuri Stone (the "dyeing stone" or "pattern-pressing stone") and a small temple in the Mochizuri Kannon temple grounds in Mojizuri (formerly Shinobu Village) on the outskirts of Fukushima City.

The stone was visited by the haiku poet and traveler Matsuo Bashō during his Narrow Road of Oku journey, which he began in 1689, and appears in a famous poem titled Kawara no Sadijin by Minamoto no Toru (822-295) about unrequited love.

This print is one of four in a set of prints titled Four Seasons of Fukushima.
