About This Print

One of seven prints by the artist that appeared in the magazine Shin Nigao whose purpose was to advertise the Kabuki theater and renew interest in actor prints.  Based upon information hand written on the back of this print, the character being portrayed is Omatsu and it is likely that the actor being portrayed in this role is Ichikawa Shōchō II (1886-1940), who played onnagata roles.

Ichikawa Shōchō II (1886-1940)as the title role in the July–August 1929 Kabuki-za production of Tōjin Okichi

Waseda University's Theatre Museum Ukiyo-e Viewing System lists the artist as unknown and this print has also been attributed, incorrectly, to the artist Ishii Hakutei (1882-1958), who was the impetus for the creation of the magazine Shin Nigao .

For more information on this short-lived magazine whose purpose was to advertise the Kabuki theater and renew interest in actor prints, see the article Shin Nigao Magazine.
