This design was one of 111 by Hasui that were shown in the second shin hanga exhibition at the Toledo Museum of Art in 1936.  Ninety-one of his landscapes were exhibited in 1930.  Hasui's presence in these exhibitions (thirty-two percent of the total prints shown) attests to the popularity of his designs among Western consumers.

Brilliant red torii, or gateway to a tiemple, on the shores of Chuzenji.  14 3/8" x 9 3/8"
Singed, Hasui; red sea, decorative form onl.  Left margin: the Japaneses title; and the date, "Showa Roku Nen Saku" (Made in the 6th Year of Showa [1931]). Right margin: copyright stamp of the publisher, Watanabe of Tokyo.  Blocks, 20; superimposed printings, about 25; edition, 200.

Lake Chūzenji is a scenic lake in Nikkō National Park in the city of Nikkō, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan.
