About This Print

The famous Owariya soba shop in Kyoto is pictured under a half moon on a quiet evening.  The original shop (honke Owariya), founded in 1465 to sell confectionery, still operates near the Old Imperial Palace.  The Owariya name 尾張屋 can be seen on the lantern and the shop's noren advertises their specialty of fresh soba 大名物 生蕎麦 (dai-meibutsu nama soba).  The shop's website provides us with the following brief history:

This print is part of a set of five prints by the artist created for the famous soba shop Owariya 尾張屋 in Kyoto, which has been in business since 1465.  Four of the prints depict scenic views in and around Kyoto and fifth depicts the Owariya.  Originally made in the 1930s this set was reprinted for the celebration of the 15th generation household head of Owariya during 1980s.  The Owariya name in kana をはりや appears on each of the prints as the publisher.
