About This Print

This print is one of seven small format prints created by Hakutei for the short-lived 1915 magazine Shin Nigao whose purpose was to advertise the kabuki theater and renew interest in actor prints. This print appeared in issue 2 published in July 1915.

This print features the actor Kataoka Nizaemon XI in the role of Gonpachi likely in the play Kamiko Jitate Ryōmen Kagami.

The orange cartouche in the upper right of the print reads 白井権八 (Shirai Gonpachi) and the yellow cartouche reads 仁左衛門 (Nizaemon).

For more information on this short-lived magazine whose purpose was to advertise the Kabuki theater and renew interest in actor prints, see the article Shin Nigao Magazine.
