About This Print

Having just read the card on the table, she clutches her handkerchief in this illustration for a story titled Onshi no musume (My Teacher's Daughter), as printed in red below the artist's signature and seal, appearing in an unknown magazine. This bijin kuchi-e displays the characteristic tri-fold resulting from its insertion into a popular culture magazine (taishū zasshi).

About Taishō-Era Bijinga Kuchi-e
Kendall Brown identifies the "golden age" of bijin kuchi-e, illustrations of beautiful women appearing in Taisho-era popular magazines, as the period between 1914 and 1921, with the genre continuing into the 1930s.

For more information on this genre and popular magazines of the period see the article Bijin Kuchi-e and Taisho-Era Popular Magazines on this website.
