About This Print

Using woodblock for the irregular shapes defining the trapezoid, silkscreen for the yellow and the blue patterns and some type of hole punch to create a grid pattern of 5/16" circular holes Funaska gives us another eye-pleasing print in his long-running series Blue and White Space. For other prints bearing this title please see Blue and White Space, No. 319 (with holes) and Blue and White Space (no holes), 1971 and Blue and White space, No. 366, 1974.  All of the prints in this edition were folded in half and placed in a folder (see above) on which is printed the following technical information:
Blue and White Space.
1 screen frame; 15 blocks of shina-faced plywood. Paper: torinoko hanga yōshi.
Pigment: vinyl-base screen-print; Japanese water-base color.

This print was included in the print portfolio accompanying the deluxe limited edition (limited to 300 copies) of Gaston Petit's 44 Modern Japanese Print Artists, published in 1973.  Each print in the folio was placed in its own cover as is shown above. The other four prints in the portfolio were created by the artists Fukita Fumiaki (1926-?), Akiro Kurosaki (b. 1937), Tamura Fumio (b. 1941) and Yoshida Hodaka (1926-1995). To view Yoshida's contribution, go to this collection's print Paradise, IHL Cat. #397.
