About This Print

In this scene from chapter 37, The FluteGenji's son, Yūgiri, is visited by the ghost of his dead cousin Kashiwagi.

Source:  Genji gojūshijō 源氏五十四帖, published by Shin Kōbe Shinbunsha, 1974.
In his dream, Kawashiwagi dressed in lined-clothes appeared and took up the flute. When Y
ūgiri tried to call out, he awoke at the cries of his baby. His wife Kumoi-no-kari said that she had kept the lattice window open shile admiring the view of the moon until late at night, and that this allowed the ghost to steal in. This remark of hers was meant to blame him for his frequent visits to Ochiba-no-Miya.
