About This Print

In this scene from chapter 16, SekiyaPrince Genji (his carriage in the foreground), now 28 years old, passes his former lover Utsusemi (her carriage among the maples) at the barrier of Mount Ōsaka on his way to Ishiayama-dera Temple.

Source:  Genji gojūshijō 源氏五十四帖, published by Shin Kōbe Shinbunsha, 1974.
In solemn splendour, the party of the Vice Governor of Hitachi was parading along the mountain-path lined with gorgeous-tinted trees of the Autumn. At the sight of this parade, Genji knew that his old sweetheart was coming back from afar. In his heart surged a secret yearning for Utsusemi.
