About This Print

In this scene from chapter 14, MiotsukushiPrince Genji, age 28, visits the Sumiyoshi shrine believing that the protection of the god, Sumiyoshi Myojin, brought him back into the emperor's favor and allowed his return to Kyoto from exile at Suma.

In the autumn Genji made a pilgrimage to Sumiyoshi. It was a brilliant progress, in thanks for the granting of his prayers. Genji passed the night in entertainments sure to please the god. He went beyond all his promises in the novelty and ingenuity of the dances. His nearest retainers, men like Koremitsu, knew how much the god had done for them.
