About This Print

In this scene from chapter 50, Azumaya (A Pavilion), Prince Niao visits Ukifune, the governor's stepdaughter. The open sliding door suggests an anticipated romantic encounter.

Wandering restlessly here and there, Niou came upon a girl [Ukifune] whom he had not seen before, out towards the west veranda.... He opened the door yet a little more and peered from behind the screen.... Never the one to hold back on such occasions, he clutched at her skirt.... He stretched out familiarly beside her.

Ukon [in service to Ukifune] groped her way through the darkness, and came upon a fragrantly reclining figure in a man's singlet. So he was at it again! She knew immediately that he did not have Ukifune's permission.... He was always being attracted to new women who had far less to recommend them.
