One of the great pleasures of the commoners of Edo was to watch Kabuki theater.... Sensitive to the interests of the people, Hiroshige depicts Saruwaka-machi, the street lined with famous Kabuki theaters and tea houses serving theater lovers.

A clear depiction of the complex facades of many buildings and street activities is greatly enhanced by Hiroshige's use of a steep linear perspective in the Western convention. Another notable influence from the West is the presence of shadow for each figure, even dogs and puppies.
